Skutterudite - the important cobalt ore
Skutterudite -also known under the German name 'Speiskobalt' - belongs to the Arsenides and has the chemical composition (Co, Ni) As3. The tin-white to gray mineral is the middle part of the mixed-crystal series of Chloanthite - Skutterudite and Smaltite. Skutterudite belongs to the most important and most frequent cobalt ores. It is formed in hydrothermal veins of arsenic - cobalt - nickel deposits. Other cobalt or nickel arsenides can appear as associated minerals, like Cobaltine, Safflorite, Chloanthite, Rammelsbergite, Nickeline, but also bismuth or silver. Skutterudite belongs to the cubic crystal system and forms crystals with a cubic or octahedral shape, but also massive or körnige aggregates.
World famous locality Bou Azzer
Besides Erythrite and Roselite is Skutterudite the third mineral that the collectors associates with the name Bou Azzer. Skutterudite is definitely the main ore mineral of the cobalt silver deposit in the anti-atlas mountains. From this locality originate certainly the nicest and biggest Skutterudite crystals of the world. Because of their very vivid metal shine and the often well formed crystals the Skutterudite specimens of Bou Azzer are especially popular in circles of collectors.
